Location an Important Gardening Decision

Smart gardeners prepare early for fall gardens. Site selection is one of the most important decisions a gardener can make.

Vegetable gardens need to be level. They require loose, well-drained soil and they need six to eight hours of sunlight.

A Level Garden

It’s good to remember that the garden must be level. Leveling helps water move easily and efficiently through the garden. A gardener who spends a little time leveling the garden will help save time, water, and more work later.

Some gardeners get very technical, using a very straight two inch by four-inch board. Fasten a spirit level to the middle of the board. Start at one end of the garden. Lay the board on the soil at one end of the bed. Move soil under it until it becomes level. Do this all the way along the bed until the entire bed is level. The space between the beds does not require leveling.

Good Soil For Fall Garden

Soil must be loose and well drained. One way to accomplish this is to add compost and finely ground leaf mold into the soil. A gardener can either make compost or purchase it from a garden center or composting facility.

Fall Garden Beds

If the garden is on a hillside, it’s a good idea to build terraces which follow the contour of the hill. This aids considerably in preventing erosion. The best site for a hillside garden is on a south-facing slope to take advantage of autumn sun and to help protect it from damaging frosts.

Low Spots

Placing a garden at the bottom of a hill or in a low spot increases the possibility of frost damage. That’s because cold air is heavier than warm air. During cold periods, the colder air will flow to the lowest areas.

Wind

Wind can damage and dry out plant leaves, stems and roots. It can also increase danger of damage from frost.

Water

Even the most waterwise garden needs irrigation. Placing the garden near a water source is important. A nearby hose bib, which can accommodate a garden hose, is essential. Some gardeners would prefer using a watering can but they should remember that toting water from any distance at all could be physically draining.

Trees and Shrubs

Trees and shrubs compete with vegetable plants for water and nutrients. They might also shade the garden during some periods during the day. A gardener knows that vegetables need at least six to eight hours of sunlight a day.

Buildings

Buildings and other structures may also shade the garden during parts of the day. Do not locate a garden near a building that might cast shade on it.

A gardener who chooses the proper location for the garden has gone a long way to developing a healthy and prospering planting area.
