Is Your Soil Too Salty?

Soil salinity can ruin your garden

High soil and water salinity levels are the bane of many gardeners.

You’ve got a new garden. You’ve worked the topsoil. You’ve been to the nursery and bought a plethora of beautiful plants. (If you’re like most gardeners, you’ve probably bought more plants than you can possibly use.)

You’ve spent several days getting most of the plants in the ground. You’ve watered them and even covered them with mulch.

A week later, you look out your window and your heart leaps into your throat. All your beautiful plants are either wilted, yellowing or look like they’ve been burned.

You wonder what could have happened. You did everything right. You followed directions.

What went wrong?

it could be one of several things:

Enemies

  • Someone dumped a lot of salt into your garden. If this is what happened, you might want to scan your list of acquaintances to determine whether any of them is carrying a grudge.

Bad Pets

  • Someone’s pet(or pets) methodically visited each one of your plants, and provided them with an organic mineral bath.

ETs

  • Extraterrestrial aliens landed in your garden last night and the afterburners of their dilithium-powered warp engines scorched your garden.

High Salinity Level

  • The soil in your garden has a high salinity level. Chances are it’s the latter (although, who knows, you may have highly productive pets in your neighborhood, enemies who have no life, or you may have concrete proof that UFOs are real.)

High soil salinity levels can be devastating on plants. The wise gardener will have a soil test conducted before the planting begins. If you have been unpleasantly surprised, it may be too late for some of your plants. However, it’s still not too late to have your soil tested.
